An
initiative develop in conjunction through Sask Sport Inc. This
education program is targeted at parents, teachers, volunteers and
coaches to assist in the development of sport programs for
children under the age of 10. A number of materials have been
developed and are available through our office. These materials
include: resource guide for parents, orientation guide for sport
leaders, a resource manual for sport leaders, promotional
materials, video, and posters.
What is Children
In Sport?
A program designed to ensure that
children receive the most positive experience possible from sport.
The focus of this program is on learning the fundamental skills
before entering into more competitive sports and on providing an
opportunity for children to have life-long experiences in sport.
What is the purpose of the program?

To develop and deliver a province
wide education program targeted at parents, volunteers, and
coaches that can be used by any group, association or individual
providing sport programs for children under 10 years of age.

There is a need to assist
instructors, parents, coaches, and teachers to make the
experience for children involved in sport programs as fun,
positive and beneficial as possible.

Basic sport programs are needed that
allow children to acquire confidence and fundamental skills, so
they can participate and remain active in sport. Example: having
lots of games can there aren’t enough opportunities to learn –
the best basketball players, for instance, will be the ones
touching the ball, so that means others will not get a chance to
improve their skills.

How can the resources be utilized?

Orientation Guide – is designed to
assist volunteers and other sport leaders in organizing parent
education programs for leagues, coaches and parent groups.
Includes information on how to set up orientation, coaches code
of conduct, sample letters to parents, fair play code for
parents and much more.

Resource Manual – sport leaders can
use this resource in their development of their sport program –
includes warm-up activities, principles for positive children’s
sport programs, self-assessment tools, ideas for play and more.

Video – can be used at the
orientation meetings for teams, registration nights, etc…..This
video features Olympic Gold Medalist Joan McCusker as the host.

Posters – put them up in your
facility to promote the program and increase awareness of why
kids participate in sport,

Parent Resource – comes with the
video; informs and reminds adults of how they can enhance a
child’s sport experience.
